Why We Teach The Way We Do
A few years ago, we began asking ourselves an honest question: is the way we are teaching actually working for all of our students? We looked carefully at what the research tells us about how children learn, and we made some significant changes to the way we structure our teaching.
We moved toward a more explicit approach, one where learning is carefully sequenced, new ideas are introduced clearly, and students are given the practice and support they need before being asked to work independently. It is not a rigid or joyless way of teaching. Our classrooms are warm and busy. But the teaching is deliberate, and it has made a real difference.
We saw the results clearly in our students’ reading. But more than the data, what we notice is how settled and confident our children are in the classroom. When the learning is clear and the expectations are consistent, children feel safe to try.
